Current Status part 2

Wow, another long time since my last post. Been going through some crazy personal stuff which for the most part has died down now.

HATCH did not go through, but I learned a lot about the submission process for curated theatre festivals, so that was really useful.

Three scripts went out, two came back with the big “REJECTED” stamp across them in my imagination. Third one I still have hopes for, as I really love the piece.

Not directing for New Ideas this year, because I did not know you could apply with a script AND apply to direct. I did do the cold reads for New Ideas this year. I don’t have a current headshot or the $$$ to get a new professional one done up. Guess I’ll do a selfie with a duck face.

No, just kidding.

Applying to InspiraTO to direct this year again if there are some scripts that grab me. Because let’s be frank, if you’re not getting paid to direct, then the script you work with had better excite you. Otherwise you’re just going to drag the whole production down with you.

That’s it for now. As part of the clean up of the personal mess of my life, I can n0w devote more time to creativity and happiness. So expect more blog posts on a regular basis.

I am super eager to see this play I’m directing for the New Ideas Festival in front of an audience. Starring Anne-Marie Krytiuk and Nicholas Porteous.

The New Ideas Festival offers a way for playwrights to help develop their work. My show is in week 3, but why not see the whole 3 weeks for one low price? A lot of great plays to attend.

Pre-Production Nearly Done

The casting process is nearly done for New Ideas. I got my list of actors from the producers, and I’ve e-mailed all of them and am eagerly awaiting responses from most of them.

I don’t know how other festivals based in a single theatre handle casting, but this one is very much in control of the producers. The most I get to do is give my three choices per role in order of preference, and wait. Fortunately, I got a lot of strong choices this year, so I’m quite happy.

A Busy New Year

I am hoping my busy year of theatre and performing carries on as planned.

First of all, I am directing a script reading of In Their Glory for week 2 of the New Ideas Festival. (If you’re a Toronto non-union actor and reading this, this is a very good festival for exposure, and they have an audition call open. They especially want non-Caucasians to audition this year.)

Second of all, I am acting in Goldilox and the Bears, the annual February panto produced by the NAGs Players. (Yes, I know pantos are traditionally a Christmas thing. No, I don’t know why this one goes up in February.) I am playing the part of Mayor Bob Chevrolet. Hmm…

Finally, there’s my own script that I am planning to do a public reading of at some point soon. This one actually involves me putting on my producer hat, which hasn’t been my strongest one, but I’m learning.

Better than sitting around watching Simpsons re-runs.

Imagining Actors

It’s not unique to me. Lots of writers do it.

Currently finishing up act 2 of the script I started 2 years ago. Two years! But I’m imagining an actor in the script from the New Ideas production I directed this year.

Seriously, I’m an old man and time is short. I’d better get this sh*t produced.

Opening Night

Phew! Opening night is over, and the show rocked! (I know, every director says that about their show.)

My cast is smart and funny, the playwright’s text moves from witty humour to deep seriousness, and the audience and tech add the final touch.

Wow! I can walk away happy now, but I’m still going to view a few more performances first.

Tears of Joy

The saddest and happiest time in the production process took place last night, when I gave my last notes, patted my stage manager on her arm, and told her, “You’re the boss now.”

It hurts to leave, but in reality, I’m no longer required. The actors now will take what the audience gives them and bloom. If they do that, maintain the integrity of what they and I built during rehearsals, and keep the audience in a constant state of unsafety, then I did my job properly.

Plus I do have other creative activities that I let slide a bit due to the show. I don’t just want one iron in the creative fire. 🙂 It will be nice to get back to them, but directing seems like something that is part of my creative core, so I will definitely be trying my best to return to it.

The audience last night was really receptive and easily led into laughter. I’m very curious to see their reaction on other nights. I will say I did get misty-eyed a couple of times from seeing that my cast was making an audience so happy.

Please come see Eve’s Prayer, part of the New Ideas Festival, week 2. And, hey, don’t miss week 3 either. This is one of the few festivals in town that promotes original pieces from authors, and I think it’s important to nurture and support that.

I am proud to be participating in this year’s New Ideas Festival. The show runs three weeks in March, with four new plays shown every week.

Come out every week. New Ideas always has great plays that show the true idea of “Small Theatre”, and a lot of people work very hard to make their piece come to life.

I am directing Eve’s Prayer, and am very excited at what my cast has done with their hard work and dedication and, most importantly, imagination I am excited to have helped the playwright, Kelsey Blair, begin the realisation of her piece on stage. I am really happy to have found a “natural” at stage managing with Shabiki Crane.

Pride in Nothing

So just now, I was painting a stool with flat black paint because another flat black stool in the theatre had walked away and I needed three of the darn things so all my actors had somewhere to park their butts.

And after I emerged from the basement, the lovely and talented Production Manager came downstairs. “Everything alright?” she asked.

“Oh, yes!” I replied, and then proceeded to launch into a monologue of how the stool wasn’t the right height, but that would be OK because I could change the blocking and no one would be inconvenienced (because of my wonderful foresight).

She watched me with a patient bemusement, which is a useful quality for dealing with directors like me. Then when I’d finished, she smiled, and bid me a fond goodbye. I chatted a bit with another director waiting for her videographer, and then I headed off for dinner.

And on the way there, I thought, My God, does anyone except me and possibly the actor care about the change in blocking? What kind of twisted egomaniac have I become?

Well, after some reflection, I came up with the following justification. Directors need recognition too. And how do they get it? Possibly at opening night if the audience seems pleased. But otherwise? You make a myriad of decisions and suggestions during the rehearsal process, and if you aren’t pissing people off with them, you are generally met with a benevolent silence.

(Actually, even if you are pissing people off, directors rarely get confronted by actors publicly. Usually they band together in secret backstage…but I digress.)

Directors crave recognition, too. Still, I’m going to watch my babbling about doing my job to people outside my immediate cast and crew from now on.
